La tesi analizza, attraverso strumenti storiografici e politologici, il processo di formazione del gruppo di lotta armata uruguaiano dei Tupamaros, soffermandosi sugli elementi di originalità dell’esperienza, in particolare sull'innovativo carattere urbano dell’azione eversiva rispetto alla tradizione precedente. L’analisi del contesto storico si accompagna a una riflessione sulle modalità di nascita e di strutturazione del movimento, mostrando come, tramite processi di delegittimazione dell’outgroup e di legittimazione dell’ingroup, il gruppo giunga a proporsi come embrionale sostituzione della struttura statale. Il capitolo conclusivo è infine dedicato a un’analisi comparativa del gruppo italiano delle Brigate Rosse, volta a dimostrare come l’esperienza tupamara non sia un caso isolato, ma rappresenti un modello innovativo ripreso e rielaborato da movimenti successivi.

The thesis analyzes, through historiographical and political-science approaches, the process of formation of the Uruguayan armed struggle group Tupamaros, focusing on the elements of originality of its experience, particularly the innovative urban character of its subversive action in comparison with previous traditions. The analysis of the historical context is combined with a reflection on the movement’s emergence and organizational structure, showing how, through processes of delegitimization of the outgroup and legitimization of the ingroup, the group came to present itself as an embryonic substitute for the state structure. The concluding chapter offers a comparative analysis with the Italian group the Red Brigades, aimed at demonstrating that the Tupamaro experience was not an isolated case, but rather an innovative model taken up and reworked by subsequent movements.
