The thesis explores the relationship between history, cultural memory and literature in relation to the South African short fiction production in a timespan going from the the transition period (1990-1993) to the post-1994 democratic elections. The investigation into the topic has been carried out with reference to three short stories penned by different authors: "Once Upon A Time" Nadine Gordimer, Ivan Vladislavić's "The WHITES ONLY bench" and "Comrade, Heal Yourself" by Sindiwe Magona. The analysis has taken into account the concept of "cultured violence" to try to shed light on the relationship between a state of "systematic violence" and the Author's personal agency.
