ITA: Nell’elaborato verrà analizzato il tema dell’espressione delle passioni nelle arti visive e, di conseguenza, si indagherà su quali strumenti utilizzare per poterle rappresentare al meglio. Partendo dal XVII secolo, verrà fatto riferimento al pittore Charles Le Brun e alle sue conferenze sull’espressione e sulla fisiognomica, nelle quali espone teorie originali e innovative sull’argomento. Dopo aver dedicato un primo capitolo introduttivo alla figura di Charles Le Brun e alle sue idee riguardo la rappresentazione delle espressioni nelle arti visive, l’elaborato proseguirà con l’analisi completa dell'opera “Conférence sur l’expression générale et particulière”.
Tuttavia per capire a pieno la necessità del pittore che ha dato vita all’intera conferenza e al suo successo, è fondamentale considerare e approfondire le influenze ricevute da teorie precedenti sull’argomento trattato, e dare uno sguardo a quelle a lui contemporanee e future, notando in seguito come verranno realmente applicate nell’ambito delle arti visive.
L'ultimo elemento che verrà evidenziato, in relazione alla pubblicazione dell’opera, riguarda l’influenza del lavoro di Le Brun nel panorama artistico: difatti, già alla fine del XVII secolo, le formule espressionistiche da esso emanate si diffusero non solo in Francia ma anche nel resto d’Europa, incontrando sia immediati sostenitori e imitatori, sia spietati critici pronti a screditare il lavoro dell’artista.

ENG: The essay will analyze the theme of the expression of passions in the visual arts and, consequently, it will investigate which tools to use in order to best represent them. Starting from the 17th century, reference will be made to the painter Charles Le Brun and his conferences on expression and physiognomy, in which he exposed original and innovative theories on the subject. After having dedicated a first introductory chapter to the figure of Charles Le Brun and his ideas regarding the representation of expressions in the visual arts, the thesis will continue with the complete analysis of the work "Conférence sur l'expression générale et particulière".
However, to fully understand the need for the painter who gave life to the entire conference and its success, it is essential to consider the influences received from previous theories of other artirts on the subject matter, and take a look at those contemporary and future, in order to see how they will actually be applied within the visual arts.
The last element that will be highlighted, in relation to the publication of the work, concerns the influence of Le Brun's work on the artistic panorama: in fact, already at the end of the 17th century, theese expressionistic formulas spread not only in France but also in the rest of Europe, encountering both immediate supporters and imitators, and ruthless critics ready to discredit the artist's work.
