The amount of research that has investigated the effect of FMVs on behavioral outcomes, such as motor performance, is greater than the small number of studies that have focused on the effects of FMVs at the cortical level. The interest in this topic dates to the early 20th century, but a complete understanding of the plastic phenomena and dynamic changes induced by FMVs has not yet been obtained. Also, the optimal application parameters of FMV, such as frequency, amplitude and duration, aimed at obtaining the most reliable results, are currently not known with certainty.
In this work, we sought to determine how and to what extent the application of FMV at the level of the upper limb (right biceps brachii) can affect neuronal plasticity, particularly the one of the hand region on the primary motor cortex (M1).
This is a neurophysiological study conducted on a sample of healthy subjects in order to improve neurorehabilitation perspectives.
The TMS evaluation indices used are three values obtained from PEM recordings performed both before and after the application of FMVs: the change in neuronal activation threshold (RMT), the change in PEM amplitude, and the change in silent period (SP). The frequency used by the Vibra delivery device, selected on the basis of the results obtained from the previous EEG evaluation, is 150 Hz; the amplitude is 1 mm.
