Summary
Breast DWI could provide additional informations about breast lesions. Optimization and comparison of different DWI protocols are important.
Aim of the study is evaluating the diagnostic performances of DWI sequences of 3 different 1.5T MR scanners in woman with breast cancer.
90 woman aged 28-78, 30 for each center, underwent breast MR for NST carcinoma. For every tumor, a circular ROI encompassing the lesion was drawn in the ADC sequence. Centimetric ROIs were drawn in the contralateral healthy breast as normal glandular controls. Fibroglandular tissue (FGT) was annotated as well.
Analysis of inter-center patients features (Age, FGT) and tumors characteristics (size) showed no significant variability, indicating a good selection.
Analysis of tumoral ADC showed statistically significant results; analysis of normal controls ADC showed not significant differences. This appearantly discordant result could be explained by: 1. DWI images at high values, like in normal gland, have a lower signal to noise ratio (SNR), that could lead to a wider measurements variability. 2. there was a different ADC sampling, with large ROIs for tumors and small ROIs for normal tissue.
The main limitation is the small number of patients.
Breast-DWI protocol optimization and quality controls of the MR scanner are an essential precondition for a widespread usability, considering its utility in giving additional biological and clinical informations on breast lesions.
