The thesis aims to provide a historical reconstruction of the introduction and spread of word processing in Italy between 1983 and the early 1990s . Therefore, following a preliminary analysis of the evolution of the concept of word processing and after a reference to the main computer technologies present in Italy in the early 1980s, the focus is on the Italian debate around the possibility of using the computer for word processing. In this regard, starting with a research carried out by Luciano Curino in May 1983, the initial and widespread concerns of the authors, often determined by the idea that the tools could have completely controlled human activity, are analysed; at the same time, reference is made to some enthusiastic pioneers (De Crescenzo, Vacca, Pozzoli, Fortini, Eco, Levi, Cerami, and Sanvitale), who highlight the advantages of computer writing, particularly for the correction of texts. Moreover, from their interviews, an attempt is made to reconstruct their approach to the digital technologies. The reference to born digital materials donated, in particular, by Fortini and Sanvitale to archival institutions has led to some considerations on the methods of preservation and storage of digital materials. Finally, we deal with the issues related to the philological study of texts and applications of the methodologies of textual forensics, with a view to the reconstruction of what Thorsten Ries calls the born-digital dossier génétique .
