Il presente lavoro di tesi è incentrato sull’analisi del velo islamico, in particolare il suo sviluppo nel contesto femminile turco nella citta di Istanbul dove ho svolto il programma Erasmus durante il mio ultimo anno magistrale 2021-2022.
Oltre a fornire le informazioni di base sul tema, il cuore di questa tesi consiste nel dare voce alle dirette interessate cerando di ricostruire un quadro quanto più possibile sfaccettato della realtà di Istanbul.
La prima parte sarà caratterizzata da un approccio più teorico per poter avere un quadro d’insieme e comprendere le nozioni basilari utili alla scoperta della religione islamica, mentre la seconda parte sarà dedicata alla città di Istanbul per mettere in luce come i precetti islamici si siano intrecciati con la vita politica della metropoli, la sua realtà socio-economica e il clima multiculturale.
La ricerca è strutturata secondo un excursus storico che ha inizio con l’illustrazione dell’uso del velo nel corso della storia per mettere in risalto come la pratica di coprirsi il volto e il capo abbia rappresentato una moltitudine di fattori, fino ad arrivare all’analisi dei versetti che richiamano la tematica del velo all’interno del libro sacro del Corano e i modi di indossarlo di più ricorrenti nei paesi a maggioranza musulmana.
In seguito sarà analizzato il ruolo del velo durante il periodo dell’Impero Ottomano fino alla nascita della Repubblica di Turchia agli inizi del Novecento. Il Presidente Ataturk ebbe la volontà di modernizzare in nuovo stato turco per avvicinarsi all’Occidente e abbandonare i precetti religiosi che lo legavano al passato Ottomano e con questo il ruolo che la donna assunse prima come emblema della modernità poi come simbolo di protesta e dissenso nei confronti dei principi laici che miravano ad oscurare i sentimenti tradizionali religiosi della comunità turca.
Il nuovo secolo è una sfida per la rappresentanza politica che deve accontentare la visione laica di cui ha bisogno agli occhi dell’Europa pur difendendo la dottrina islamica. Questo sarà il compito dell’AKP, il partito della Giustizia e dello Sviluppo che si definisce democratico-conservatore.
La ricerca si concentra in particolare sul ruolo del velo nella città di Istanbul in un’analisi dei tempi moderni dove ho avuto la possibilità di svolgere una serie di interviste a ragazze e donne velate di diverse età che hanno contribuito a rendere lo studio più ancorato alla realtà, mostrandomi come decenni di continui scontri sul tema abbiano portato ad indossare il velo con motivazioni identitarie, politiche, culturali e religiose, per ciascuna donna diverse.
Ciò che quindi ambisco ad esprimere è la complessità che si sviluppa dietro questa tematica provando a superare gli stereotipi che alimentano la concezione del velo islamico nella città di Istanbul.
In this work I focused the analysis of the Islamic veil, in particular its development in the Turkish women contest in the city of Istanbul where I studied during my Erasmus period during the last year of master degree between 2021 and 2022.
The most important part of this thesis is given by the interview that I have done that give me the opportunity to build a more detailed vision of reality as possible.
The first part will be characterized by a more theoretical approach in order to have an overall picture and understand the basic notions useful for the discovery of the Islamic religion, while the second part will be dedicated to the city of Istanbul to highlight how Islamic precepts have become intertwined with the political life of the metropolis, its socio-economic reality and the multicultural climate.
The research is structured according to a historical excursus that begins with the illustration of the use of the veil in the course of history to highlight how the practice of covering women's face and head has represented a multitude of factors and after that the analysis of the verses that recall the theme of the veil in the holy book of the Qur’an and the most common ways of wearing it in countries where Muslim religion is representing the majority of people.
Later the role of the veil will be analyzed during the period of the Ottoman Empire until the birth of turkish Republic in the early twentieth century. President Ataturk had the will to modernize the new turkish state to get closer to the West and abandon the religious precepts that linked him to the Ottoman past and with this the role that the woman assumed first as an emblem of modernity then as a symbol of protest and dissent in the opposition to secular principles which aimed to obscure the traditional religious sentiments of the turkish community.
The new century is a challenge for political representation which must satisfy the secular vision needs in the eyes of Europe while defending Islamic doctrine. This will be the task of the AKP, the Justice and Development party that calls itself as a conservative-democratic.
The research focus in particular on the role of veil in the city of Istanbul in an analysis of modern times where I had the opportunity to carry out a series of interviews with veiled girls and women of different ages which helped to make the study more anchored to the reality, showing me how decades of continuous clashes on the subject have led to wearing the veil with different identity, political, cultural and religious reasons, for each woman.
What I therefore aim to express is the complexity that develops behind this theme, trying to overcome the stereotypes that feed the concept of the Islamic veil in the city of Istanbul.
