Summary
Transrectal prostatic biopsy is a daily performed urological procedure, which is not completely free from infectious (fever, urinary tract infections, sepsis) and non-infectious (hematuria, rectal bleeding, urinary retention) complications. Recent warnings from European and Italian drug-control authorities and the rising of antibiotic resistances have imposed a revision of the antibiotic-prophylaxis schemes employed in the practical clinic. This study has the aim to evaluate transrectal prostate biopsy complications in a wide cohort of patients from three Italian urological units, with a focus on the effects of the different antibiotic prophylaxis schemes on infectious complications.
