Summary
Sexuality and discrimination based on sexual orientation have been investigated in the last decades. LGBT people are often discriminated and harassed for their nature. They tend to suffer from sleep problems, to commit suicide and to suffer from substance use more than the general population. Moreover, in most countries they have been banned from serving in military. In the U.S. the DADT policy was repealed in 2011. Anyway discrimination still exists.
In the first years of XXI century suicide attempts in the U.S. Army increased. For this reason a project called "Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Service Members (Army STARRS)" has been carried out.
In our study the Army STARRS's database was used to investigate military personnel's sexual behaviour and discrimination based on lifestyle and their associations with insomnia, suicidality and substance use.
