Riassunto
La ricerca ha lo scopo di ricostruire la committenza artistica dei Gesuati in Toscana tra la fine del XIV secolo e il 1668, anno della soppressione dell’ordine. Si è tentato di comprendere in che modo i frati si siano stanziati nei maggiori centri della regione, in particolare Siena, Firenze, Pistoia, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno e Arezzo, ripercorrendo le vicende costruttive dei loro conventi e delle loro chiese e cercando, quando possibile, di ricostruire il loro aspetto e la loro decorazione interna dal momento della fondazione alla fine del XVII secolo.
La ricerca è stata condotta a partire dallo studio delle chiese e dei conventi ancora esistenti. La loro struttura è stata analizzata ripercorrendone le vicende costruttive e i loro arredi sono stati ricostruiti attraverso l’analisi delle guide storiche delle città e delle fonti d’archivio risalenti all’epoca di permanenza dei Gesuati. Per poter poi comprendere quanto di ciò che è ancora oggi visibile negli edifici sia effettivamente ascrivibile all’attività e alla committenza dei Gesuati e cosa sia invece frutto di interventi successivi, è stato necessario in alcuni casi ripercorrere la storia degli edifici dopo la soppressione dell’ordine decretata da Clemente IX nel 1668. Alcuni di questi hanno mantenuto la loro funzione originaria di luoghi di culto e altri sono stati completamente riconvertiti a nuovi usi, che spesso hanno cancellato le tracce della presenza dell’ordine.
The research aims to reconstruct the artistic commission of the Gesuati in Tuscany between the end of the fourteenth century and 1668, the year of the suppression of the order. The aim is to understand how the friars settled in the major centers of the region, Siena, Florence, Pistoia, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno and Arezzo in particular, retracing the constructive events of their convents and their churches and trying, when possible, to reconstruct their appearance and their internal decoration from the time of foundation to the end of the seventeenth century.
The research was conducted starting from the study of the still existing churches and convents. Their structure has been analyzed by retracing the construction events and their furnishings have been reconstructed through the analysis of the historical guides of the cities and archival sources dating back to the time of the presence of the Gesuati. In order to understand how much of what is still visible today in the buildings is actually attributable to the activity and commission of the friars and what is the result of subsequent interventions, it has been necessary in some cases to retrace the history of the buildings after the suppression of the order decreed by pope Clement IX in 1668. Some of these have maintained their original function and others have been completely reconverted to new uses, which often have erased the traces of the presence of the order.
