L’elaborato proposto vorrebbe umilmente inserirsi al consistente contributo svolto da studiosi e appassionati che negli anni hanno consentito, tramite le loro ricerche, a far luce sull’enorme patrimonio documentario dell’Archivio Datini di Prato. La seguente tesi infatti prende in consegna l’obiettivo di trascrivere parte della corrispondenza scambiata fra il mercante pratese e un’importante famiglia di mercanti pisani di fine Trecento, i Grassolini. La ricerca si divide principalmente in due sezioni: la prima parte consiste in una lunga introduzione contestuale, con una rapido riassunto sulla storia dell’Archivio Datini, sulla vita del mercante, sull’evoluzione dell’economia tardo-medievale che portò alla formazione del sistema di compagnie di fine XIV secolo e in particolare nella piazza commerciale pisana. La seconda parte invece si concentra sui reali protagonisti della tesi, ossia la compagnia Grassolini, con un focus sui vari componenti della famiglia e le tracce che hanno lasciato all’interno della storia comunale pisana, cominciando dal primo vero rappresentante della famiglia, Ciolo Grassolini ad inizio secolo, fino ai fratelli Giovanni e Gherardo che saranno le principali firme delle lettere che ho analizzato. Le lettere appunto occupano la parte finale dell’elaborato, con una presentazione generica su come si strutturava una lettera mercantile, gli argomenti importanti che vi ho trovato al loro interno e una sommaria descrizione dei personaggi che sono citati. Infine, l’appendice è formata da una cronologia sulla vita di Datini, l’elenco delle elezioni alla carica di Anziani coperte dai Grassolini, foto di alcuni documenti, foto delle lettere prese in esame con la loro trascrizione.

The proposed thesis would like to humbly join the substantial contribution made by scholars and enthusiasts who, through their research over the years, have shed light on the enormous documentary heritage of the Datini Archive in Prato. The following thesis in fact takes on the objective of transcribing part of the correspondence exchanged between the Prato merchant and an important Pisan merchant family of the late 14th century, the Grassolini. The research is mainly divided into two sections: the first part consists of a long contextual introduction, with a quick summary of the history of the Datini Archive, the life of the merchant, and the evolution of the late-medieval economy that led to the formation of the system of companies at the end of the 14th century and in particular in the Pisan trading post. The second part instead focuses on the real protagonists of the thesis, i.e. the Grassolini company, with a focus on the various members of the family and the traces they left within the municipal history of Pisa, starting from the first real representative of the family, Ciolo Grassolini at the beginning of the century, up to the brothers Giovanni and Gherardo who will be the main signatures of the letters I analysed. The letters themselves occupy the final part of the paper, with a generic presentation of how a merchant letter was structured, the important topics I have found within them and a brief description of the characters who are mentioned. Finally, the appendix consists of a chronology on Datini's life, a list of the elections to the office of Anziani covered by Grassolini, photos of some documents and photos of the letters examined with their transcription.
