Riassunto
Children are considered to be more successful learners of foreign languages than adults. Therefore, children have to be approached with the most efficient teaching methods in order to exploit their potential to the fullest. The aim of this study is to examine the best methods to teach English as a foreign language in Italian elementary schools. Theoretical studies on how age and process of learning languages are strictly related are considered, with an excursus of the main teaching methods throughout history in order to provide a framework for the analysis. Empirical data were gathered with three different research tools addressed to Italian teachers of English at elementary school: questionnaires, interviews, and focus group. These tools provide both quantitative and qualitative data, which were analysed and discussed. Furthermore, a linguistic analysis of the corpus composed of the transcriptions of the interviews and the focus group was conducted. The results show that children require involvement and dynamicity in class and that teaching materials and activities should also respond to these needs.
