Abstract
The arrival of the Normans and the establishment of a new political power in Sicily fostered changes also at artistic level through the introduction of new architectural models coming from the Countries of the new conquerors.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the most important Norman bell towers in Sicily and to compare them with those of the major cathedrals, monasteries or churches in France, England, Germany and southern Italy, from which the Sicilian architecture took inspiration.
To this end, I decided to consider the evolution of bell towers from their origins to the Middle Ages.
Moreover, the architectural analysis of bell towers with circular, square, polygonal and composite maps and shapes, as well as the various positions of bell towers within religious complexes shall be useful to the purposes of this paper.
With specific reference to Sicily, the historical and geographical context has been thoroughly examined; in fact, I shall analyse the issues relating to the various dominations that alternated in Sicily in the Middle Ages, from the Arabs to the Normans, from the Swabians to the Angevins and the Aragonese.
The Normans gave the island exceptional works thanks to their policy based on tolerance which favoured the coexistence, in the same territory, of different religions and cultures, thus combining in the same building the Norman floor plant with Arab elements and Byzantine decorations which joined forces to yield unique architectural and artistic works.
