La guerra in Ucraina, scoppiata lo scorso 24 febbraio 2022, ha caratterizzato il dibattito politico e quello accademico degli ultimi mesi. In questo elaborato se ne propone un’analisi attraverso il punto di vista, il pensiero e le opere di John J. Mearsheimer. In particolare, si pone l’accento sulle posizioni dell’autore, ripercorrendo in parte i suoi contributi accademici più significativi e si mettono in evidenza i caratteri del suo Realismo offensivo.
L’obiettivo del presente lavoro è quello di delineare un quadro del Realismo, quale corrente di pensiero in cui Mearsheimer è incasellabile, fornendo una panoramica delle varie correnti, partendo dalle origini del Realismo, con Tucidide, Machiavelli e Hobbes, passando dal Realismo classico con Carr e Morgenthau, per arrivare infine al Neorealismo di Waltz e al Realismo neoclassico. Da qui il collegamento con la vita, il pensiero e le opere di John Mearsheimer. Per ragioni di spazio e di coerenza con il filo rosso che lega tutto il lavoro, si è scelto di analizzare solo alcuni dei suoi contributi, ed in particolare il suo punto di vista sulle invasioni russe in Crimea nel 2014 e nel resto dell’Ucraina nel 2022. Inoltre, viene presentato un resoconto generale del conflitto in atto e un breve commento su quelli che potrebbero essere i possibili scenari futuri.
L’elaborato si è basato su una ricerca bibliografica, sia cartacea che online, considerata anche l’attualità del tema. Inoltre, si è scelto anche di integrare il lavoro con il supporto di video integrali di conferenze e convegni tenuti negli anni da Mearsheimer. Esso, oltre a dare la possibilità al lettore di approfondire l’argomento della guerra in Ucraina dal punto di vista sia generale che di Mearsheimer, permette anche di capire quali sono gli assunti principali del Realismo e quali potrebbero essere i possibili scenari del conflitto stesso. Si è cercato, quindi, di spiegare le reali cause e le conseguenze di ciò che ha portato a quella che è la prima guerra combattuta in Europa dopo la fine del secondo conflitto mondiale. L’analisi offerta sul punto di vista di John Mearsheimer incentiva il lettore a una visione critica e d’insieme, che permette una riflessione personale interessante, dato che, allo stato attuale delle cose, ciò che appare certo è che il conflitto ancora non accenna a una sua conclusione e che sono necessarie delle risposte che permettano una conclusione pacifica della guerra, evitando un’escalation militare pericolosa, nonché una risposta in termini di politica economica e politica energetica.

The war in Ukraine, which broke out on 24 February 2022, has characterised the political and academic debate in recent months. In this paper, an analysis is proposed through the views, thoughts and works of John J. Mearsheimer. In particular, emphasis is placed on the author's positions, partly tracing his most significant academic contributions, and the characteristics of his Offensive Realism are highlighted.
The aim of this paper is to outline Realism as a current of thought into which Mearsheimer can be embedded, providing an overview of the various currents, starting with the origins of Realism, with Thucydides, Machiavelli and Hobbes, moving on from Classical Realism with Carr and Morgenthau, and finally to Waltz's Neorealism and Neoclassical Realism. Hence the connection to the life, thought and works of John Mearsheimer. For reasons of space and consistency with the thread that binds the entire work, we have chosen to analyse only some of his contributions, and in particular his views on the Russian invasions of Crimea in 2014 and the rest of Ukraine in 2022. In addition, a general account of the ongoing conflict and a brief commentary on what could be possible future scenarios is presented.
The paper was based on a literature search, both in print and online, also considering the topicality of the subject. In addition, it was also decided to supplement the work with integral videos of lectures and conferences held by Mearsheimer over the years. It not only gives the reader the opportunity to delve into the topic of the war in Ukraine from both a general and Mearsheimer's point of view, but also allows the reader to understand what the main assumptions of Realism are and what the possible scenarios of the conflict itself could be. Thus, an attempt was made to explain the real causes and consequences of what led to what is the first war fought in Europe after the end of the Second World War. The analysis offered from John Mearsheimer's point of view encourages the reader to take a critical and comprehensive view, which allows for interesting personal reflection, given that, as things stand at present, what seems certain is that the conflict still does not hint at a conclusion and that responses are needed that will allow for a peaceful conclusion to the war, avoiding a dangerous military escalation, as well as a response in terms of economic and energy policy.
