Summary
The indirect life cycle of Anisakis takes places in the marina environment, with crustaceans as first intermediate hosts, fish and cephalopods as second or transport host and cetaceans as definitive hosts (citaz). Although studies on the occurrence of this zoonotic parasite mainly focus on fish species, data on cetaceans are of interest. Stranded cetaceans thus represent an important source of data. Data produced by IZS were analysed in order to aquire information on Anisakis presence in cetaceans stranded along the Thyrrenian coast in the last five years.
