Summary

This thesis deals with various aspects of solid propellant pulsed plasma thruster design. The behavior of devices of this class was first analysed by means of euristic models such as the slug model and the snowplow model. Different types of energy storage circuits needed to power the pulsed current discharge were considered: capacitor bank, transmission line and pulse-forming-network. For each energy storage solution the theoretical model was completed with the relevant circuit equations. The model equations were then integrated by means of numerical techniques and solutions were obtained for a variety of operating conditions. An ample selection of the solutions obtained is provided in the relevant Appendix. Regarding the study of the ablation process two semi-empirical models are described that can help estimate the rate of ablated mass per shot. A practical solution is finally suggested for the storing of the solid propellant in coaxial PPTs with radial feed. Results provided in this thesis should hopefully prove useful in the design of new PPTs and in the evaluation of their experimental performance.
