Summary
The creation of the feast of St. Napoleon aimed to support the permanence of Napoleon Bonaparte on the French throne. First of all it tried to deny the charge of usurpation of the Bourbon’s crown, justifying Napoleon’s monarchical dignity thanks to the glorification of his virtues and prominence. Moreover the feast of St. Napoleon, highlighting Bonaparte’s singularity originated from God’s will, aspired to add a celestial legitimation to the two main sources of the emperor’s power: the popular consent and the military victories. Studying the feast of St. Napoleon is thus essential in order to understand how the secular “mythe du sauveur” on which Bonaparte initially based his rise was developed in a holier and holier way after the foundation of the Empire, until it reached the aspect of a real worship directed both to the person of the emperor and to his policy.
