Sommario

Abstract

The purpose of this work is the simulation of the behavior in the last two stages of high pressure in a centrifugal compressor, used in geothermal power plants for maintaining the vacuum in the condenser. The main aim was to investigate the variation of the operating parameters with a possible range of mass flow rate processed by the machine, with and without the use of an Inlet Guide Vane on the first stage, and check whether the use of the prerotation's blades was foreseen in the original project. For the realization of the model, was used a 3D models of the compressor's shell and 2D drawings of diffusers and impellers, obtained by reverse engineering from existing machines.
The softwares Pro / Engineer Wildfire 4.0 and Solid-Works 2010, were used to design the volumes in which the fluid evolves, the computing grid was realized using the software Gambit 2.3.16 and exported in Fluent 13 environment. In Fluent environment was imposed the model boundary conditions: constant pressure at the outlet and mass flow at the inlet. The model was validated in the operating point defined in the manual, checking whether the IGV was part of the original design, estimating the expected degree of vacuum and the resulting suction velocity triangles in the first stage.
Then were analyzed the velocity triangles of both stages (inlet and discharge) in the range of the flow drawn and the incidence's angles at the diffuser's inlet, were finally found for the stators' gain coefficients and for impellers' degree of reaction. In conclusion of the analysis, were given indications for a possible modification of the inlet guide vane, in order to ensure a better adjustment of the compressor in the extraction of incondensable gas from condenser.
