Riassunto:
In questo lavoro vengono studiati i casi di ironia verbale presenti nel Mercator di Plauto. L’analisi viene condotta sulla base delle moderne teorie sviluppate soprattutto nell’ambito della pragmatica e della psicologia che inquadrano l’ironia verbale da diversi punti di vista e ne illuminano elementi differenti. I vari approcci (l’approccio griciano, la teoria ecoica, la teoria della finzione) vengono sfruttati contemporaneamente per individuare i vari livelli su cui l’ironia opera e i diversi effetti che crea, arrivando così a cogliere tutta la complessità e tutte le sfaccettature di questo tipo di espressione. Vengono quindi messi in risalto i modi e le forme con cui l’ironia compare nella commedia e quali sono gli obiettivi dei personaggi che la usano, cosa che permette di apprezzare in modo nuovo e più approfondito il significato di certi scambi e delle scene e in più, oltre a offrire un’interessante prospettiva con cui affrontare i problemi testuali, consente di osservare sotto una luce diversa i personaggi, trovando caratteristiche che fino ad ora sono rimaste in ombra o riconoscendo tratti già notati la cui presenza viene in questo modo rinsaldata.

Abstract:
In this work I study the occurrences of verbal irony in Plautus' Mercator. The analysis is conducted on the basis of modern theories developed above all in the fields of pragmatics and psychology, which observe verbal irony from different points of view and illuminate different elements of it. The various approaches (the Grician approach, the echoic theory, the pretense theory) are exploited together to identify the various levels on which irony operates and the different effects it creates, grasping in this way all the complexity and all the facets of this kind of expression. The ways and forms in which irony appears in the play and the purposes of the characters who use it are therefore highlighted, which allows us to appreciate the meaning of certain exchanges and of the scenes in a new and more in-depth way and furthermore, in addition to offering an interesting perspective with which to address textual problems, it permits also to observe the characters in a different light, finding characteristics that until now have remained unnoticed or recognizing already known traits, whose presence is thus strengthened.
