Analizzando la letteratura degli ultimi settant’anni si evince come il ruolo paterno sia mutato e si sia modificato nel corso della storia già a partire dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale e come questo cambiamento abbia avuto ripercussioni su molteplici aspetti della vita familiare. In particolare, l’assenza del padre, concisa principalmente con l’inizio della guerra, ha apportato modifiche e cambiamenti di ruolo, di percezione familiare e di educazione.
Questa tesi si propone di indagare e ricercare i principali cambiamenti che hanno interessato i ruoli del padre, cercando di dare un senso più ampio e significativo alla genitorialità condivisa; soprattutto con l’intento di sensibilizzare un tema così attuale ma al contempo da molto dibattuto.
La funzione materna è da sempre indagata, la si inserisce in contesti specifici, la si riesce a descrivere, positivamente e negativamente, sin dal momento del concepimento del bambino. Per questo è lecito chiedere: è possibile dire altrettanto della figura paterna?
Dati i repentini cambiamenti, se dapprima il ruolo del padre veniva considerato come poco definito e sfumato, ad oggi risulta ancora più complesso delinearlo a dovere.

Analyzing the literature of the last seventy years, we can assert how the paternal role has changed in the course of history since the Second World War and how this change has affected many aspects of family life. In particular, the absence of the father, concise mainly with the beginning of the war, brought changes in role, family perception and education.
This thesis aims to investigate and research the main changes that have affected the roles of the father, trying to give a wider and meaningful sense to shared parenting; especially with the intention of increasing awareness of such a topical but at the same time much debated issue.
Unlike the paternal function, the maternal function has always been studied, is inserted in specific contexts, can be described, positively and negatively, from the moment of conception of the child.
For this reason it is legitimate to ask: is it possible to say the same of the father figure?
Given the sudden changes, if at first the role of the father was considered as poorly defined and nuanced, today it is even more complex to delineate it properly.
