Summary
The aim of this thesis is to analyse and reconstruct the evolution of relations between the Soviet Union and Western Europe in the period between 1985 and 1991. In pursuing it, I have tried to bring together and make two different perspectives of analysis, namely the study of diplomatic relations and the study of political ideologies and cultures. With regard to the former, elements of particular interest are certainly those relating to the developments in the Soviet Union of the New Thinking and Gorbachev's conception of the 'Common European Home'. Similarly, I tried to investigate the reasons that led, with slightly different time frames, some European countries, I analysed the cases of Great Britain, France, FRG, Italy, Spain, to look with confidence and support the Soviet reforms. Turning to the second, it is crucial to better understand Gorbačëv's initiatives and the evolution of his worldview. While remaining a communist, it is finally interesting to analyse the important relations developed by the Soviet leader with the European socialist and social democratic world.
