Within the domain Bacteria, the phylum Proteobacteria constitutes at present the largest and phenotypically most diverse phylogenetic lineage; it can assume many different shapes, to reflect the enormous diversity of morphologies and physiologies observed within this bacterial phylum. During my PhD project, I worked with three different bacteria belonging to the Proteobacteria phylum. In both the first and second studies I focused on a bacterium ascribed to the Midichloriaceae family in association with Red Mark syndrome (RMS-MLO) order Rickettsiales. In the third study, I analysed the presence effect of Ca. Megaira polyxenophila, a natural endosymbiont of Paramecium; this bacterium belongs to the same order of RMS-MLO but in a different family which is Rickettsiaceae.
Eventually, we investigated the interaction among Rheinheimera, a free-living bacterium isolated from the rhizosphere of Echinacea purpurea. Rheinheimera sp. belongs to the class of Gammaproteobacteria and indeed to the order of Chromatiales family of Chromatiaceae.
The aim of this PhD project was the investigation of the relationships between the partners of a symbiotic system and the way of transmission of bacterial infection by means of associated organisms.
