Summary
Today, cloud computing is an increasingly preponderant technology able to support many types of applications ensuring economic and environmental benefits. However, power consumption is an increasingly intrusive problem, Nature magazine estimated that data centers each year consume around 200TWh of energy and it is expected that their consumption will increase by 15 times in the next 7 years and reach around the 8\% of the total energy consumed on our planet and the 2\% of the total carbon emissions. There is a growing focus on how to act on the problem also because lower energy consumption corresponds to lower operating costs and consequently to more profitable services. In our work we have adopted one of the latest service models developed for resource consumption optimization, the Function as a service, and developed a solution for energy efficiency starting from one of the most promising open-source platforms available.
