Oggetto del presente studio sono le culle in miniatura del Bambin Gesù, oggetti devozionali diffusi a partire dalla metà del XIV fino a tutto il XVI secolo. Essi si configurano inizialmente come possedimento personale di donne, soprattutto religiose ma anche laiche, e potevano poi essere lasciati alle comunità di riferimento divenendo quindi occasione per una devozione corale. Abbiamo rilevato come essi fossero oggetti non-finiti in loro stessi, ma sempre accompagnati da un apparato di accessori che servivano all’opera per “funzionare”. Dopo aver passato in rassegna le opere che rientrano nelle due categorie morfologiche principali – le culle sospese a telaio e i lettini – abbiamo proceduto con un’analisi tipologica mettendo in luce le differenze e le similitudini con le cosiddette Andachtsbilder. Dopo un breve excursus sulle culle-reliquiario, abbiamo posto l’attenzione sui contesti d’uso e sulle qualità interattive delle culle devozionali, analizzando nel contempo l’importanza del tatto e dell’udito, due sensi attivati nel fruitore all’attivazione dell’oggetto e dall’oggetto. Tramite un’analisi delle pratiche di imitatio Mariae, delle connessioni con la mistica femminile, delle implicazioni eucaristiche e della dimensione ludica di queste opere, abbiamo tentato di mettere in luce l’importanza di questi oggetti in un’ottica operativa e performativa, scoprendo come essi riuscissero ad annunciare e a materializzare la presenza reale del Divino: presenza sollecitata nei tempi presenti attraverso pratiche paraliturgiche e promessa per i tempi futuri.

The subject of this study are the miniature cradles of the Infant Jesus, devotional objects widespread from the mid-14th to the 16th century. They were initially a personal possession belonging to women, mainly religious but also laywomen, and could then be left to their communities, thus becoming an occasion for choral devotion. We noted how they were objects unfinished in themselves, but always accompanied by an apparatus of accessories that were necessary for the work to 'function'. After reviewing the works that fall into the two main morphological categories – suspended cradles and cribs – we proceeded with a typological analysis highlighting the differences and similarities with the so-called Andachtsbilder. After a brief excursus on the cradle-reliquaries, we focused on the contexts of use and interactive qualities of devotional cradles, while analysing the importance of touch and hearing, two senses activated in the user upon activation of and by the object. Through an analysis of the practices of imitatio Mariae, the connections with female mysticism, the Eucharistic implications and the playful dimension of these works, we attempted to highlight the importance of these objects from an operational and performative point of view, discovering how they succeeded in announcing and materialising the real presence of the Divine: a presence solicited in present times through paraliturgical practices and promised for a future time.
