The following thesis consists of the study and application of a methodology for the forecast of freight demand through Alpine passes for the years 2030 and 2050. After the illustration of the main railway and road passes and the analysis of both present and future infrastructures, Input-Output models were studied. In particular, Input-Output models were evaluated with constant and elastic trade coefficients and the Okamoto’s model was chosen. The latter was applied to estimate the freight demand for three different scenarios (current scenario, project scenario and future scenario), by using respectively import, export and production data for 2020, 2030 and 2050. Subsequent to the study concerning forecasting techniques, the R software was used to calculate the future values for 2030 and 2050, with the application of the Holt’s method and ARIMA models. Once these results were obtained, Okamoto’s model was applied for the desired periods and the demand beetween the various zones was achieved. Then, the O/D matrices were aggregated according to the centroids chosen for this study and the modal split between railway and road was carried out. Finally, by applying the Probit model on the MATLAB software, it was possible to perform the assignment of the freight demand to the Alpine passes, by using three optimizations for the railway demand and two optimizations for the road demand. In this way it was possible to evaluate how the distribution of freight demand will change across Alpine passes in the different scenarios, assessing the impact of actual and future projects on freight transport.
