L'obiettivo della tesi è stato ricostruire gli eventi che hanno caratterizzato la guerra del Golfo analizzandoli dalla prospettiva delle Nazioni Unite, al fine di comprendere il ruolo inedito che ha avuto l’organizzazione internazionale, che sembrava potesse finalmente spiegare la sua forza e diventare un vero e proprio “poliziotto” del mondo, all’interno del particolare clima creatosi nei primi anni del post-guerra fredda.
L'analisi prende avvio dagli eventi precedenti lo scoppio delle ostilità che videro grande partecipazione e consenso internazionale, fino ad arrivare al ruolo assunto dalle Nazioni Unite nel dopoguerra, che mise in campo ingenti e innovative risorse al fine di assicurare l'osservanza irachena dei fondamentali diritti umani, tra successi e fallimenti in questa prospettiva.


The objective of the thesis was to reconstruct the events that characterized the Gulf War by analyzing them from the perspective of the United Nations, in order to understand the unprecedented role that the international organization had, which seemed to be able to finally explain its strength and become a real "policeman" of the world, within the particular climate created in the early years of the post-Cold War period.
The analysis starts from the events preceding the outbreak of hostilities, which saw great participation and international consensus, up to the role assumed by the United Nations in the post-war period, which deployed huge and innovative resources in order to ensure the Iraqi observance of fundamental human rights, between successes and failures in this perspective.
