The following work analyzes the territory of north-eastern Piedmont in order to categorize the most remarkable social experiences of the Xth and XIth centuries which caused the most considerable effects on the documentary collections of the cathedral chapters of Novara and Vercelli. The study not only focuses on the aristocracy and on the regional and supraregional elites, it also attempts to recreate the underlying social milieu, which is quite well highlighted by the written sources at least as far as some places nearby Novara are concerned: hence the idea of a "social spectrum" that stands as a metaphor for the electromagnetic spectrum. The title also suggests, as a second fundamental aspect, the territorial framework each of the social subjects is placed in. Thus, the chapter structure is made up of pairs of places or geographical areas being either linked by similar features or antithetical, so as to guarantee a comparison in any case: the first pair deals with two neighbouring towns adjacent to Novara, towards which the ecclesiastical bodies of the city developed very different economic strategies; the second describes two regions at the border of the area of enquiry between Vercelli and Pavia, where especially families that would have sided with Arduin of Ivrea during the stormy years around 1000 took roots; finally the third refers to the two main "unofficial" power hubs of Novara and Vercelli areas, joined by the most important aristocratic lineages of the Kingdom of Italy and even by the German Crown in this chronological period. The last pages aim to sum up the previous issues with the purpose of comparing the general features of the Vercelli area with those of the Novara area in the early medieval centuries.
