Natalia Sats was a multifaceted artist who lived through the multiple historical changes of the Soviet Union. She can be considered one of the most influential women in children’s theatre in the Twentieth century. Yet, her activity and her personality remain unexplored, especially in Europe. The main purpose of this dissertation is to give a general overview of the available sources and a first critical reconstruction of her biography – finding a balance between private life and artistic activity. The research will be addressed from a wide perspective, merging history, theatre and pedagogy. The sources include her main memoirs, but also interviews and unpublished archival documents which were collected during three months of research in Moscow. More specifically, it will be investigated the genesis of the first professional theatres for children in Russia and the first steps taken by the Russian artist, straight after the Revolution, when the political uncertainty and the struggle of the civil war were paralleled by explorations in any field. Although of the Russian artist spans almost through the entire XX century, the dissertation focuses on specific moments, aiming at highlighting how this peculiar woman’s voice of the XX century could suggest interesting future paths of researches in the field of historian, pedagogical, theatrical and gender studies.
