La tesi offre uno studio di alcuni racconti di due autrici che appartengono a contesti socio-culturali differenti: la neozelandese Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) e l’americana Kate Chopin (1850-1904).
Le short stories analizzate sono in tutto otto, quattro per ogni autrice: Bliss, Prelude, At the Bay e Marriage à la Mode di Mansfield, e A Point at Issue, The Story of an Hour, The Storm e A Pair of Silk Stockings di Chopin, tutte accomunate dalla tematica del matrimonio. Un punto focale della riflessione è la questione della marginalità, declinata sia sul versante del gender, in quanto si tratta di donne che parlano di donne e affrontano numerosi aspetti dell’universo femminile, sia a livello del genre, poiché entrambe le autrici privilegiano il genere del racconto, da sempre relegato in una posizione ancillare rispetto al romanzo.
Nelle Conclusioni s’intende dimostrare che, al di là delle importanti differenze, condizionate dai diversi contesti in cui Mansfield e Chopin si sono formate e hanno sviluppato la loro esperienza umana e artistica, tra le due autrici ci sono innumerevoli affinità, sia in termini contenutistici, sia in termini stilistici.


The thesis offers a study of short stories by two authors from different socio-cultural backgrounds: the New Zealander Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) and the American Kate Chopin (1850-1904). The short stories analysed are eight in all, four for each author: Mansfield's Bliss, Prelude, At the Bay and Marriage à la Mode, and Chopin's A Point at Issue, The Story of an Hour, The Storm and A Pair of Silk Stockings, all sharing the theme of marriage. A focal point of the reflection is the question of marginality, declined both in terms of gender, since these are women who talk about other women and deal with numerous aspects of the female universe, and at the level of genre, since both authors privilege the genre of the short story, which has always been relegated to an ancillary position with respect to the novel. In the Conclusions, the intention is to show that, beyond the important differences, conditioned by the different contexts in which Mansfield and Chopin were formed and developed their human and artistic experience, there are numerous affinities between the two authors, both in terms of content and style.
