Riassunto
SOMMARIO

ABSTACT
The medieval bell tower of the San Francesco church in Pisa has a unique structure. It was built entirely of masonry, and it has no foundations of its own. Instead, it rests on the two outer walls of the left transept of the homonymous church and on two limestone blocks embedded within the same walls.
The main objective of this work is the dynamic identification of the parameters of the bell tower materials through the measurement of its natural frequencies and modal shapes, in order to be able to perform the relevant structural analyses.
For this purpose, a monitoring campaign has been carried out, instrumenting the bell tower with both accelerometers and velocimeters. At the same time, a high-resolution finite-element model has been created. Values of the material parameters capable of reproducing the dynamic characteristics measured during the monitoring campaign have been identified using a Bayesian updating technique. To reduce the computational burden, a surrogate FE model has been created through a polynomial approximation of the solution.
The identification process produced the values of the material's elastic modules at different heights of the bell tower. Finally, the static analysis of the structure was performed using results from previous phases.
