La tesi si basa sulla traduzione e il commento di due opere dell’autore irlandese Padraic Colum: la raccolta di folklore per ragazzi “The Boy Who Knew What the Birds Said” (1918) ed estratti di nonfiction da “Road Round Ireland” (1926).
L’elaborato ha inizio con un excursus storico-culturale sull’Irlanda moderna e sui fermenti del primo ‘900, tra movimenti di indipendenza e l’attivismo culturale dell’Irish Literary Revival, con riferimento alla ripresa del folklore e delle tradizioni popolari. Segue una panoramica sulla biografia di Colum, con un focus sul legame che unisce l’autore all’Irish peasantry. Si considera poi la poetica di Colum come autore per ragazzi, descrivendo il libro preso in esame.
Si passa poi a un excursus teorico sui Translation Studies applicati alla traduzione di libri per l’infanzia: dopo aver trattato gli aspetti più attinenti alla traduzione dell’opera di Colum (ossia i temi del target audience e del contrasto tra domestication e foreignization, con riferimento a Klingberg, Oittinen, ecc.) si espone l’approccio adottato durante il lavoro, riflettendo sulle idee di equivalenza funzionale, di foreignization e della loro possibile conciliazione (riferimento a Nida, Venuti, Eco, ecc.).
Segue l’analisi pratica della traduzione, sia del libro di narrativa che degli estratti di nonfiction. Si riportano esempi delle principali criticità incontrate (fenomeni fonetici, lessicali, sintattici, elementi culture-bound, ecc.), illustrando e motivando le scelte effettuate.

The thesis is based on the translation and analysis of two works by the Irish author Padraic Colum: the children’s folklore collection “The Boy Who Knew What the Birds Said” (1918) and extracts from the nonfiction book “Road Round Ireland” (1926).
The essay begins with a historical-cultural contextualisation of modern Ireland and of the unrests of the early Twentieth century, including independence movements and the cultural activism of the Irish Literary Revival, with reference to the importance of folklore and traditions. There is also an overview of Colum’s biography, focusing on the bond between the author and the Irish peasantry. This is followed by a chapter dedicated to Colum as a children’s author, with a description of the chosen book.
Further on, the thesis focuses on a theoretical overview of the area of Translation Studies applied to the translation of children’s literature. After considering the most pertinent aspects regarding the translation of Colum’s work (i.e. the topics of target readership and of the contrast between domestication and foreignization, with reference to Klingberg, Oittinen, etc.), the main approach chosen during the work is presented, with reference to the ideas of functional equivalence, foreignization, and their possible conciliation (cf. Nida, Venuti, Eco, etc.).
Following is the practical analysis of the translations (both of the fiction book and of the nonfiction extracts), with examples of the main difficulties faced during the work (phonetic, lexical, and syntactic phenomena, culture-bound elements, etc.) and explanations of the chosen translation strategies.
