Riassunto
During the last few years, users all over the world have become more and more accustomed to the availability of broadband access. This has boosted the use of a wide variety both of established and recent multimedia applications and consequentially the need of a new broadband access system also for areas where is slow deployment (or no deployment at all) of traditional wired technologies (e.g., xDSL, cable modem, ISDN).
In these cases, the most promising technology is IEEE 802.16, also known as WiMAX, a new standard designed for fixed subscriber stations. The recently developed extension IEEE 802.16e is a new standard for mobile wireless broadband access systems, adding mobility to the previous standard.
In IEEE 802.16e, like any mobile networks, power saving is one of the most important features for the extension of devices lifetime. In this thesis I study the sleep-mode operation of IEEE 802.16e and parameters related to this operation.
The purpose of this work is to study adequate trade-off between network performances and power saving performances by choosing the proper values for power saving parameters. Firstly I focus on these power saving parameters (e.g., initial-sleep window size, listening window size, idle time and maximum-sleep window size) and then to the performance evaluation of power saving mechanism in different scenarios using various traffic types (e.g., Web, Gaming, FTP or VoIP traffic).
