Riassunto
In this thesis we study doping, a very debated topic which, however, has not been studied in great detail, so far. We aim at filling this gap. Doping is a common practice, in competitions, especially in bodybuilding competitions, which became popular starting from the 70s. This also for the push, deriving from cold war, between American and Russian competitors. For this reason, in that period doping was widespread and, consequently, training methodologies were targeted to doped athletes. Only recently, natural bodybuilding has been properly identified and specific training methodologies, addressed to athletes not using anabolic substances, have been systematically developed. This because the metabolism of a natural athlete needs a longer time for recovery, and has a reduced anabolic capacity.
Despite these apparent differences between the two approaches, doped and natural, the training methodology is basically the same. The only differences stem from the fact that, as is well known, the use of drugs confers the athlete a greater strength, an increased anabolic capacity, and a better muscle recovery. This implies a different schedule of the exercises, to match the specific recovery time of the athlete, depending on the possibile use of drugs. The same argument applies to the anabolic capacity, which is affected by doping.
The two above points of view to training will be here fully developed by systematically studying, through a scientific approach, the changes in metabolism determined by the use of anabolic substances. Consequently, it is explained and motivated the way training adapts to maximize the augmented athlete’s potential.
