Pur facendo entrambi parte di un unico universo culturale, gli archivi e le biblioteche, hanno vissuto a lungo senza riuscire ad instaurare un reale dialogo o una effettiva collaborazione. L’avvento dell’automazione di procedure, di contenuti e di servizi, prima, e quello di Internet e del Web, dopo, hanno fornito nuove possibilità e nuovi mezzi per la realizzazione di obiettivi comuni ed hanno modificato intenti ed atteggiamenti, favorendo la progressiva apertura, mentale e culturale, di entrambe le comunità. Il lavoro ripercorre le modalità di formazione di archivi e biblioteche rivisitando il dibattito storico svoltosi tra i diversi “padri” della disciplina archivistica, sulle caratteristiche e sui rapporti della stessa con la biblioteconomia e l’evoluzione dei processi di automazione, sia da un punto di vista concettuale che pratico-applicativo. Vengono pertanto esaminati i maggiori contributi teorici elaborati, in merito, dalle due comunità e, nelle loro strutture fondamentali e in un’ottica comparativa, anche gli standard, le direttive e i formati di scambio più significativi, anch’essi prodotti in entrambi i settori. L’ultimo capitolo è dedicato, invece, ad un breve excursus sui prodotti dell’automazione e sulle maggiori esperienze compiute in ambito italiano, sia a livello nazionale che locale o regionale.


Although part of a single cultural universe, archives and libraries have long lived without to establish a real dialogue and an effective cooperation. The advent of automation of processes, contents and services, before, and of Internet and the Web, then, have provided new opportunities and new means to achieve common goals. So, the intentions and the attitudes have changed, favoring the progressive opening, mental and cultural of both communities. The work traces the modes of formation of archives and libraries in reviewing the historical debate that took place between the different "fathers" of the archival discipline, the characteristics and the relationships of the same with the library and the evolution of the automation processes, from a conceptual point of view and from a practical-applicative point of view. Are therefore examined the major theoretical contributions elaborated on the matter, by the two communities and the most significant standards, guidelines and exchange formats, in their fundamental structures and in a comparative perspective, also produced in both sectors. The last chapter consists of a brief overview on the products of automation and on the most significant experiences in the Italian context, both at national than at local or regional level.
