This paper focuses on the analysis of the operational risk of banks and insurance companies, a particular risk which is different from the other financial risks to which an institution is subject in carrying out its business. After analyzing the regulatory aspects of Solvency and Basel relating to the calculation of the capital requirement and the framework of the entire operational risk management process, the attention is focused on what are considered the "new" operational risks, particularly the cyber risk and the ESG risks, which are increasingly developing due to the ongoing technological process. With the advent of Covid-19, the spread of digital infrastructures has increased, allowing institutions to continue to operate and offer their services with the aim of business continuity, ensuring their operational resilience. Together with the opportunities in the long term, the pandemic has also brought along challenges, which realize in the materialization of new risks to which institutions will have to respond through the reorganization of their distribution models and through their integration into the traditional management process
