Riassunto
Car driving has always been considered a simple and safe activity, although it can become complex and dangerous when some conditions occur.
Many of these risks have been minimized through the equipment of advanced electronic security systems, simplifying what the driver has to do.
This thesis proposes a solution to judge distances among the car and the surrounding objects that cannot be determined while driving for the lack of visibility due to the blind spots. The proposed solution uses four fisheye cameras to film what surrounds the car, then it merges the different videos into a single stream through digital video processing, rendering the environment as if seen from above. In the end, it plays the video in real-time on a display inside the vehicle.
The design consists of two main algorithms: the correction of the distortion introduced by fisheye lenses, and the fusion of video streams.
With respect to other solutions similar to the one proposed, the system was developed paying particular attention to the cost of the components to obtain a competitive product.
The thesis was developed in collaboration with the company R.i.CO. s.r.l, which provided all the components and applications needed.
