«I want to write about this specific cultural moment», that’s what Sally Rooney said about the themes at the core of her writing, and the literary text is indeed a powerful tool of investigation through which the author communicates in an original way his/her personal view of the world. In particular, the thesis will focus on the strategies allowed by the short story.
The literary translator's task is to transfer in another culture the individual representation of the world as it was conceived by the original author; in order to do so, it is imperative for the translator to gather all the information necessary for a correct framing of the text one will have to work on.
My thesis aims at describing the theoretical approach to Sally Rooney’s short stories translation.
The first chapter of the thesis is devoted to a description of the cultural and literary context in which the short stories were written. The first paragraph offers an overview of contemporary Irish literature in order to illustrate how the search for Irishness became one of the main themes through literary genres and various generations of writers. The following paragraph is dedicated to the biography and writing of Sally Rooney, in order to call attention to the topics around which her works revolve and how these are deeply rooted in contemporary Irish society. Finally, the chapter last paragraph deals with the short story as a literary genre, highlighting those formal peculiarities deemed relevant to the translations: first of all, the reasons why the short story is a genre often little considered were discussed; then it has been outlined how brevity shapes the form and narrative structure of the text; finally, it has been highlighted how the genre is often characterised by lyricism and how it influences the characters representation.
In the second chapter topics more inherently related to translation theory are discussed, occasionally supported by examples from the translated short stories. The first paragraph analyses the main difficulties posed in translation by the literary text, which all revolve around the need to simultaneously preserve both form and content of the original text. In light of this, the second paragraph deals with the phases of the translating process and the role of the translator as a mediator between different cultures and literary experiences, and it will also be shown how the translator’s task depends on the receptor readers. Finally, the last paragraph describes strategies to translate culturally-specific elements and to convey the linguistic manifestation of a central theme in Rooney's work such as gender roles.
The third chapter consists of the collection of Sally Rooney’s short stories and their Italian translation. All of the writer’s short stories were included, and they have not been published in Italian up until now.
The fourth and final chapter is devoted to linguistic and translational analysis of some of the short stories specific features whose discussion was not included in the previous chapters. The first paragraph focuses on the author's style, which mirrors not only the themes addressed in the short stories but also Rooney's personal experiences. The analysis continues in the second paragraph, in which some difficulties encountered in translating the narrative discourse, due to the differences between English and Italian, are examined.
This is followed by the conclusion, in which, in addition to taking up the points of the reflection conducted during the previous chapters, it is highlighted how every translations could potentially undergo new modifications.
