Il presente lavoro di traduzione nasce dall’interesse maturato nei confronti della filologia germanica e degli studi medievistici. I tre saggi selezionati fanno parte della collana Neues Handbuch der Literaturwissenschaft (See et. al.; 1985), vol. VI Europäisches Frühmittelalter. I principali campi d’indagine degli autori (K. von See, R. Schieffer e O. Gschwantler) riguardano la rete di rapporti culturali dell’epoca benedettina, l’area comunicativa altomedioevale (da Cordoba a Bisanzio), la connivenza dell’universo scritturale (dotto e cristiano) e di quello orale (in volgare e laico). A tale proposito viene adottata un’ottica che considera le opere letterarie altomedioevali da un lato come prodotti della latinità, dall’altro del Germanesimo. Seguono poi panoramiche storiche approfondite sull’età carolingia e sulle relazioni tra Occidente, Oriente e Settentrione. Proprio l’esordio del Nord scandinavo è oggetto di un’ampia trattazione riguardante l’impatto delle orde vichinghe e della cultura scandinava. La traduzione è introdotta da un commento in cui vengono affrontate problematiche relative ai criteri periodizzanti, ai concetti di scritturalità e oralità (anche in rapporto al milieu altomedioevale) e alle peculiarità linguistiche e stilistiche del testo (Individual- e Textortenstil).


The interest in Germanic Philology and Medieval Studies brought me to decide on translating three essays belonging to the book series Neues Handbuch der Literaturwissenschaft (See et. al.; 1985), vol. VI: Europäisches Frühmittelalter. The authors (K. von See, R. Schieffer, O. Gschwantler) focus their attention on the following fields of research: the cultural relationships during the Benedictine Age, the Early Middle Ages communicative area (from Cordoba to Byzantium) and the co-existence of two divergent domains: the Latin Christian literacy and the vernacular laic orality. By this point of view, literary works of Early Middle Ages may be seen as both products of Latinity and Germanic culture. Furthermore, the Essays offer a detailed historical view, especially in relation to Carolingian Age and the connection among coeval West, East and North. In particular the explosion of northern forces is object of an exhaustive exam, aimed to show the impact the Viking invasions had on the Continent and the main characteristics of Scandinavian culture. The translation is accompanied by an introduction, which deals with periodization criteria, the concepts of literacy and orality (connected with the Early Middle Ages milieu) and the linguistic and stylistic peculiarities of the text (both Individual- and Textortenstil).
