Il matrimonio è la grande ferita sanguinante, e mai cicatrizzata, della vita di Pirandello. Sainte-Beuve credeva che la letteratura è il riflesso della vita dell’autore. Il matrimonio, in rapporto alla sua esperienza, diviene il filo che lega i testi della vastissima produzione pirandelliana. Scene di vita coniugale compaiono in tutti i testi novellistici. Nella ricerca svolta si è indagata la produzione novellistica pirandelliana in una luce nuova, rintracciando la contiguità che le novelle hanno tra loro e con gli altri testi pirandelliani. Si sono sondati, inoltre, gli echi di sottofondo a ciascuna raccolta del corpus delle Novelle per un anno e la direzione tracciata dall’autore nella composizione di ciascuna raccolta novellistica. Lo studio ‘in verticale’ dei testi, seguendo la loro stratigrafia, ha permesso di ricostruire la genesi di un uomo e di uno scrittore.

Marriage is the great bleeding wound - never healed - of Pirandello's existence. Indeed, Sainte-Beuve believed that literature is a reflection of the author's life. At the light of the Pirandello's tragic experiences, marriage becomes the fil rouge which passes through all his works. Thus, daily scenes of marital life represent the recurring setting where all his stories begin. The approach adopted inside the doctoral thesis investigates Pirandello's short story production under a new holistic viewpoint, highlighting those elements interrelating short stories, theatre production and novels, revealing also Pirandello's personal life struggles. Such research focuses on the cultural background of each story of the corpus of "Novelle per un anno" and on the direction the author traced in the composition of each short story collection. The 'vertical' study of the texts, suggested by the stratigraphical analysis, reconstructed the genesis of a man and a writer.
