The purpose of this dissertation is to discover if it is possible to write poetry about War, and, if it is possible, how. This study is focused on First World War's french poems. Through the analysis of the works of eight authors, written between 1913 – 1956, we tried to higlight how these poets faced this subject, which solutions they chose to solve the inevitable ethical and litterary issues that this kind of subject presents. Thanks to the study of these poems, we managed to reach different conclusions about the themes and the forms employed to talk about the War. Concerning the themes, we could notice that, regardless of the kind of work, namely if it is propagandist or not, a literary canon was created and used to describe the soldiers and their terrible living conditions. Furthermore, we have been able to discover the existence of some taboos, of moments and scenes which are for the poets impossible to tell and share. Poets used some loopholes and indirect ways to talk about facts, emotions and life experiences which they felt otherwise impossible to say by convenctional means. Concerning the forms, poets who wrote during the war found in avant-garde experiments a very important solution to solve some problems, even to overcome their taboos ; on the contrary, the later ones, came back to the strict rules of classical poetry. In the end, we can sustain that it is possible to write poems about War but this is a very difficult exercise that requires a significant effort from the poets.
