Abstract
In this thesis work, the recent literature on analytical techniques for the evaluation of causes and effects on the gut-brain axis that predispose to the onset of neurodegenerative diseases (such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease) was examined. First, the composition of the microbiota in a homeostatic environment was analyzed to understand how a dysbiosis can modify the balance between bacterial phyla, thus inducing intestinal permeability and then inflammation. To date, there is no significant evidence that dysbiosis can originate from a previous disease or is the inflammatory effect of the disease itself. The studies examined showed that in neurodegenerative diseases there is an altered microbiotic composition, and this is a factor that also unites mental disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, but also developmental disorders such as autism. The role of the intestine-brain axis in the etiology of these diseases was then examined given the biochemical and nervous connection that exists between the two. We also investigated the possibility that there are other connections between organs such as between the intestine and the liver (predisposing to liver disease) or even between the intestine and the immune system (dysbiosis which could be linked to autoimmune diseases).
The evidence that emerged from clinical trials on the existence of a link between microbiota and the aforementioned diseases lies in the fact that if one intervenes through an anti-inflammatory dietary therapy aimed at restoring eubiosis, assisted by natural / nutraceutical products, drugs and physical activity, it is possible to notably improve the symptoms of the disease itself or to prevent it.
Finally, the purpose of this thesis work is to be able to understand what predisposes and causes these diseases and how nutraceutical intervention is in these cases an important frontier for the prevention and improvement of symptoms.
