Summary
My thesis explores the practice of parenteral nutrition (PN) in premature newborns, focusing on the experience of the Compounding Center of the Apuane Hospital. Premature infants have specific nutritional needs that require targeted parenteral therapies. Clinical evaluation is essential to determine the need for nutritional support, involving the pharmacist as a filter to prevent medication errors. However, PN may be associated with complications, such as cholestasis, which must be monitored and managed to ensure patient safety. The pharmacist plays a key role in the preparation of standard and personalized nutritional mixtures, ensuring the safety and quality of the therapies provided. The data collected in Neonatology departments provide crucial information on the use and effectiveness of nutritional therapies in premature newborns. Parental involvement in decision-making and implementation of PN is essential for successful treatment and a smooth transition to enteral feeding. The experience of the Compounding Center of the Apuane Hospital represents an exemplary model in the management of PN in premature newborns, with lessons applicable worldwide to improve clinical outcomes and quality of care.
