Summary
The Chernobyl disaster, which took place in 26th april 1986, clearly played a role in shaping the public's opinion on the use of nuclear energy. The 1980-1989 decade became a turning point for Italy regarding that issue, from a promising source of energy for the country to something to avoid completely. This master's thesis looks into the way some major italian newspapers explained what had just happened in Chernobyl to the nation and how their reports influenced people's view on nuclear power plants, especially during the campaign for the 1987 referendum on the subject.
