Riassunto
With a view to decarbonisation, the use of renewable energy sources is considered a must; unfortunately, they do not produce energy continuously, but rather intermittently. To solve this problem, it is necessary to use energy storage technologies. Numerous literature sources indicate redox flow batteries as one of the most promising energy storage technologies based on their ability to decouple power and energy, good scalability and flexibility.

In this paper, a 0-dimensional multi-cell redox flow battery model is presented and tested for state-of-the-art flow battery technology: all-vanadium redox flow batteries. We go on to analyse the performance of VRFBs by providing variability to the two major parameters of uncertainty: internal resistance and vanadium crossover flow. This is done by determining a credible variability from literature and performing a Monte Carlo analysis on the previously constructed model.
The model is then used to perform a sensitivity analysis on different parameters in order to provide desiderata for a possible organic redox couple with comparable performance to vanadium and modified to include the use of solid boosters, one of the most innovative technological solutions for redox flow batteries.
