Il presente lavoro ha come oggetto l’analisi approfondita della struttura organizzativa di una nave militare della prima metà del 1800, specialmente, facendo riferimento agli scritti del celebre scrittore Herman Melville che ha narrato ampiamente del presente argomento e prendendo come caso principale la nave, chiamata Neversink, su cui è ambientato uno dei suoi primi romanzi: “White Jacket”. In particolare, si pone l’attenzione sulla struttura gerarchica, la divisione del lavoro, la vita quotidiana nella marina statunitense, la distribuzione del potere e l’utilizzo dell’autorità e della disciplina per il comando della nave.
L’obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di andare ad individuare gli schemi organizzativi, la progettazione divisionale del lavoro e la configurazione strutturale in un brigantino (veliero con due alberi a vele quadre) sfruttando, soprattutto, le opere letterarie del 1800 che trattano e descrivono il soggetto in essere. Per le fonti sono stati usati, soprattutto, romanzi della prima metà dell’1800 di avventure marinare che contengono in essi descrizioni più o meno dettagliate di quella che era la vita a bordo, dell’organizzazione stessa della nave, della definizione di ruoli e mansioni tra l’equipaggio e gli ufficiali e di come si passava il tempo per mare.

The present work deals with an in-depth analysis of the organizational structure of a military ship of the first half of 1800, especially, referring to the writings of the famous writer Herman Melville who has narrated extensively about this topic and taking as its main case the ship, called Neversink, on which is set one of his first novels: "White Jacket". In particular, the focus is on the hierarchical structure, the division of labor, the daily life in the US Navy, the distribution of power and the use of authority and discipline to command the ship.
The aim of this thesis is to identify the organizational schemes, the divisional design of the work and the structural configuration in a brig (sailing ship with two square sails) using, above all, the literary works of 1800 that deal with and describe the subject in being. For the sources I have used, above all, novels of the first half of the 1800’s of marine adventures that contain in them more or less detailed descriptions of what was life on board, the very organization of the ship, the definition of roles and duties between the crew and officers and how time was spent at sea.
