Riassunto
Official public statistics provide reliable, summarized information about nations' sectors.
Official Statistics Portals are web applications where users can consult such information. They usually offer several representations of data for each domain.
Nevertheless, there is an invisible part to data consumers: the data modeling and dissemination. This process often involves multiple organizations.
Therefore, for data belonging from heterogeneous sources to be shared, a standard is required.
Data presentation and visualization represent the last stages of the pipeline adopted by public statistical systems. They follow other steps such as data modeling and dissemination, which usually represent the more crucial steps of this task.
Indeed, since these steps involve several organizations, the definition of a common, shared standard is needed to integrate data from multiple sources, allowing them to share similar, coherent data.
One of the solutions to this problem is the international initiative SDMX, which stands for Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange. It was proposed to be a standard for the mechanisms and processes for the exchange of statistical data and metadata among international organizations and their member countries. It is sponsored, among others, by seven international organizations: the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the European Central Bank (ECB), Eurostat (Statistical Office of the European Union), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD), and the World Bank. This report focuses on the development of two Official Statistical Services exploiting the SDMX standard.
It documents the activities performed from October 2020 to February 2021 during the candidate's internship at Imedia SAS.
During this training period, the trainee took part in the development of two web portals of Public Statistics: the State Statistical Service of Ukraine and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Knowledge Hub.
The development included the problem analysis, decision making concerning the adopted technological solutions, the Extract Transform and Load (ETL) process, the modeling of statistical data, and their dissemination through the web portals.
In addition to these activities, the trainee took part in the integration of the related applications, as well as in the development of analysis, monitoring, and evaluation services.
