Questo lavoro analizza l'affresco della Maddalena, dipinto da Piero della Francesca nel Duomo di Arezzo. Sono state ricostruite le sue vicende storiche e condotte alcune ricerche di archivio sulla sua committenza. Dopo lo studio della vicenda critica dell’opera, sono state esaminate le fonti letterarie della figura della Maddalena e l’evoluzione della sua iconografia, dalle prime rappresentazioni fino all’epoca di Piero. Si è poi passati ad un esame iconografico dell’affresco che ha mostrato che il pittore intende proporci un momento storico preciso della vita della santa, quello della sua conversione. L’indizio fondamentale per questa interpretazione è il fatto che la porta che la santa si appresta a varcare è particolarmente piccola e stretta, allusione alla “porta stretta” della salvezza, di cui si parla nei Vangeli di Matteo e di Luca. Nell’ultima parte, infine, si è ricostruita tridimensionalmente la scena dell’affresco, dimostrando che per la sua realizzazione Piero ha utilizzato alla lettera i metodi anni dopo esposti nel suo famoso trattato De prospectiva pingendi.
This work analyzes the fresco of the Magdalene, painted by Piero della Francesca in the Cathedral of Arezzo. Its historical events have been reconstructed and some archive research has been conducted tried to discover when the work was ordered to Piero and by whom. After studying how the work was treated in the artistic literature, the literary sources of the figure of the Magdalene and the evolution of her iconography were examined, from the first examples up to the time of Piero. We then moved on to an iconographic examination of the fresco that showed that Piero intends to offer us a precise historical moment in the life of the saint, that is the moment of her conversion. The fundamental clue to this interpretation is the fact that the door that the saint is preparing to cross is particularly small and narrow, an allusion to the "narrow door" of salvation, which is spoken of in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. In the last part, finally, the scene of the fresco was reconstructed three-dimensionally, demonstrating that for its realization Piero used the methods years later exposed in his famous treatise De prospectiva pingendi.
