This work is focused on the use of social media in the employee recruitment activities and it aims to show and explain how social media enter to be part of the recruiting process and how they can be used effectively by employers to find the best candidates. The project was born after a 1-year internship in the Human Resources team at Fluidigm Corporation, a biotech company based in South San Francisco. The work is divided into three parts: the first chapter includes an overview of the main steps of the recruitment process, with a particular focus on the initial phases, and a discussion about the instruments at company’s disposal before and after the advent of Internet as well as the benefits and the challenges connected to the use of these tools. The second chapter is focused on social media and their implications when used in the recruitment process. In particular, the focus in this chapter is on “what”, “when”, “why” and “how”. The last chapter is about Fluidigm Corporation and it has been analyzed what sources the organization uses for its recruiting activities and the effectiveness of its recruiting strategy. The references used for this work include literature by expert authors in the field as well as articles, business records, corporate websites and interviews.
