Riassunto
The thesis presents a preliminary design for an in-orbit docking/undocking mechanism for two 6U CubeSats using off-the-shelf components, aiming to promote modularity in space. The design process has commenced with a thorough review of the state of the art to evaluate existing commercially available mechanisms, considering their advantages and disadvantages, alongside an assessment of various requirements. Three designs are proposed and evaluated based on mass, volume, and system complexity, ensuring adherence to CubeSat Design Specification standards. Structural analysis ensures the integrity of the components under launch conditions. In addition, modal and harmonic analysis confirm structural stability and demonstrate resilience against potential issues such as unstable combustion or propellant sloshing, aligning with NASA and European space standards.
