Summary
The Internet of Things (IoT) has the potential to change the world just as Internet did but its proliferation may lead to turn this sector into ones of most energy consuming in the ICT industry. An attractive research field is studying how IoT technologies will impact on the global energy consumption. In this thesis, we propose a model able to estimate the overall energy spent for the production, maintenance and disposal of IoT solutions. We illustrate the application of the model to a use case, namely the air quality monitoring system developed by the European project Rescatame. We also present a web service that we have prototyped to allow users to easily experiment with the model.
